Calm, connection and ceremony
“A shell or two of kava is a traditional way to close the day across the Pacific islands.”
Kava is known for its calming, de-stressing effect when enjoyed in moderation. Once reserved for special occasions and village chiefs’ nakamals, it is now shared in neighbourhood kava bars where friends gather in a quiet, reflective atmosphere.
A small amount is traditionally poured on the ground to honour ancestors, followed by “Malok”—cheers—and the shell is drunk in one go. Friends will generally drink each round together.
